From the time of its establishment in 2005, BAAC has undertaken the following activities:

  • Development and Publication of 500 copies of a Business Code of Conduct for Combating Corruption in Malawi, whose soft copy is also in pdf format;
  • Secure widespread support for the code from big as well as medium to small enterprises. To achieve this, Chief Executive Officers of companies were asked to sign a letter of commitment to oblige themselves that they would abide by the provisions of the code. So far, 30 companies have signed up the code;
  • Identification of 2-3 areas of concern to the private sector in terms of corruption levels in order to engage government on how to address the concerns. BAAC is in the process of identifying these areas and formation of work groups that will engage government on each of the identified areas;
  • BAAC taskforce members meet bi-monthly to share lessons and plan for future work;
  • BAAC is in the process of identifying 6-10 business leaders from different industries that will champion the BAAC initiative in their respective industries;
  • BAAC is currently developing a rating system that will be used to measure compliance to the code. A work group to work on this has been established and Convention on Business Integrity, an institution from Nigeria, has been invited to assist in the development of this rating system;
  • As per USAID requirement BAAC needed to develop appropriate project management, monitoring and evaluation and reporting systems. These have been developed and are currently operational;
  • BAAC plays a coordination and focal point role for anti-corruption matters on behalf of the business community by interfacing with various stakeholders including the ACB and civil society.
